Revelation! Contemporary art from Benin
for culture and heritage
From 15 December 2023 to 31 March 2024, the Fondation Clément is hosting the "Revelation! Contemporary Art from Benin" exhibition. This exhibition features 42 contemporary artists and more than a hundred works, unleashing all of the vibrancy of the arts scene of Benin and its diaspora through a range of different media, including painting, sculpture, installations, video art, drawing, digital art and performance.
Created as a space for making Benin's culture more accessible to a range of different audiences in Martinique and for supporting artists from the Caribbean, the Fondation Clément is delighted to host the "Revelation! Contemporary Art from Benin" in partnership with the Benin Arts and Culture Development Agency (ADAC), a cultural operator focussing on developing international cultural initiatives.
Following in the footsteps of the "Hervé Télémaque" exhibition in 2016, the "African Artists of Yesterday and Today" exhibition in 2018 and the "Pascale Marthine Tayou. Black Forest" exhibition in 2019, born out partnerships with prestigious institutions such as the Centre Pompidou and the Fondation Dapper, this exhibition on contemporary art from Benin helps to reinforce the focus on artistic encounters between African and Caribbean scenes.
Initially presented in two parts as part of the "Benin: Art of Yesterday and Today, from Restitution to Revelation: Royal Treasures and Contemporary Art of Benin" two-part exhibition at the Palais de la Marina in Cotonou in February 2022, it took visitors on a journey through classical art and contemporary art from Benin over three centuries of Benin art history. This exhibition in Cotonou celebrated the return of twenty-six royal treasures after 130 years of exile and threw an unprecedented spotlight on contemporary creations from big-name and emerging artists in Benin.
